Tom Adams Appointed to CHSSP Advisory Board

The CHSSP is excited to announce that Tom Adams has been appointed by Governor Newsom to serve on the CHSSP Advisory Board.  Currently a Board Trustee for the Davis Joint Unified School District, and formerly Deputy Superintendent of the Teaching and Learning Support Branch at the California Department of Education (CDE), Adams is well versed in history-social science education.  Adams holds a Ph.D. in History from UC Davis, and, while at the CDE, he oversaw the adoption of the History-Social Science Framework, along with scores of other educational guidance documents.  In commenting on his appointment, Executive Director McTygue noted, "Through his service on the CHSSP Advisory Board, and as the Executive Director of the Instructional Quality Commission, I came to know and appreciate Tom as a trusted colleague and mentor.  He is a man of great integrity, honesty, insight, and genuine dedication to public education in general, and the work of the CHSSP / CSMP in particular."

As a longtime member and leader of the CHSSP network, Adams recently reflected,

"I remember serving on the advisory board as the CDE representative in the late 1990s and early 2000s and in those days we visited project sites. I distinctly remember seeing workshops where  K-12 teachers and higher ed teachers (professors) collaborated on good teaching, especially controversial but necessary topics. I knew at that point CHSSP and CSMP needed to be part of the state’s curriculum guides or what we call curriculum frameworks. It hasn’t always been easy but California education policy is better for CSMP’s participation and contributions."

The CHSSP - and educators all around California - will surely benefit from Adams' long view of and high regard for the CHSSP network.
