This inquiry set is designed to introduce students to the lives and pasts of American heroes and their hometowns. Students will learn what everyday characteristics our past American heroes, like Royal Towns who was raised in Oakland, had and their various contributions to their hometowns.

Students will learn and discuss the multiple cultures and peoples that historically have contributed to the farms and produce of the United States. Students will compare and contrast how food was grown on the farm, who tilled the crops, and how produce is delivered to American grocers and markets.

This inquiry set is designed to introduce to students the structure and functions of the federal government. It also provides students with three sources that help them understand how they -as children and potential voters -can voice their perspectives to their government leaders.

This primary source set asks students to consider the actions and characteristics of people who have made notable contributions in history and their community. The investigative questions have students determining who was/is a hero and the different he/she made.

This inquiry set is designed to take place after students have had the opportunity to research family and/or local history with the desired outcome of answering the question(s), “Why did my family settle in California?” or “Why did families decide to settle in our region?” While being careful to respect that many students may not know or want to discuss their own family circumstances, teachers should take time to explain the circ
